Late spring through early fall is often the most practical window to plan on staining your deck, provided you get a sufficiently dry stretch.
- Clean the deck and remove moss, algae, and dirt.
- Allow the wood to dry to the moisture level required by the stain manufacturer.
- Check the forecast for the required rain-free period before and after application.
- Apply the stain within the manufacturer's recommended temperature and weather conditions.
Don't stain simply because the calendar says summer. Shaded boards can remain damp for days after rain.
